Earlier today (Tuesday, Nov 11th) Microsoft announced a new Server platform called Microsoft Search Server.  It will come in two versions, Microsoft Search Server Express is a freely downloadable server, and Microsoft Search Server Enterprise that will allow you to place an enterprise ready Search Server in your Enterprise Environment.

The goal of Search Server is (from the site):

Give users efficient access to unstructured data, structured information, and expertise. A successful enterprise search solution helps to keep sensitive information secure, is easy to set up, administer, and manage, leaves room for scalability, and allows you to customize and extend your search experience.

Here's the download location for the Release Candidate: Click here to download (again, the Express version will be free)
