I just stumbled upon a really interesting how to article (2 parts with screen shots and a good explanation of some steps) on how to setup Forms Based or "Custom" Authentication with SharePoint 2007. Forms Based Authentication is typically used in a SharePoint scenario where you either don't have/want to use Active Directory, or have a need for a simpler (i.e., including less management overhead) user name/password database. This has been around in ASP.NET world for a while, and most recently in ASP.NET 2.0 Microsoft gave you a nice Web UI to set one up for your Web Applications if you wanted to, versus hand building everything. I've been thinking about doing a "How to" Video segment on the subject and still may, but for those of you who want some information on how to do it now, this is a good resource.
