David Chou, an Architect Evangelist for Microsoft has written an interesting article, which I think is worthy of a quick read on the subject Web 2.0 from a "Web as an Application Platform" Perspective.  This is close to my heart, as I see Web Technologies like SharePoint from an Application Platform perspective.  SharePoint is just one web technology that developers can build a variety of user experiences on top of.  David provides a perspective on what “Web as a Platform” means in the Web 2.0 world, and a generalized view of the cloud-based platform.

From David:

Collectively, the rich cluster of "Web 2.0" sites on the Internet form a services foundation from which applications and functionalities can be built upon, without needing any additional dedicated infrastructure. As a result, this collection of cloud-based services form a new kind of "platform" to create a new breed of applications.
