Fred Morrison has posted a "How to" Article on his blog about Creating a Discussion Thread in SharePoint/MOSS 2007 programmatically while overriding the default behavior/value of the "Author" field,  I figured that I would post it, just incase anyone wants to do a similar thing on a portal project and are running into issues.  As Fred points out, there are a few "interesting features" in how one needs to format some of the field entries.  To be honest, I didn't know about this "issue", I mean "feature" until Fred pointed it out on his blog.  It's a short read with easy to read code, so check it out if you need the knowledge of how to do this.
